Just minutes away, the Tri-Cities area is a major hub of transportation in the Pacific Northwest with intermodal service provided by excellent highway linkages, two national mainline and one shortline railroad companies, commercial airlines, and barge companies.

Benton City is located at Exit 96 of Interstate Highway 82, which connects directly to three transcontinental Interstate Highways, I-84, I-90 and I-5.  Benton City also provides accessible, alternate routes to the main corridors.  Area connections include:

Rail Access

Burlington Northern Santa Fe’s tracks pass through the southeast perimeter of Benton City. Mainline rail freight service via Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads is available in the Tri-Cities, along with short line service provided by Tri-City and Olympic Railroad Company. In addition, the northwest hub for innovative distribution platform Railex is 32 miles away at Wallula. Railex offers temperature-controlled non-stop direct service to California, New York, Florida, and Illinois, ideal for food and beverage products including wines.  For passenger rail service, Amtrak has a station in Pasco.

Air Transportation

Commercial air service is available through the Tri-Cities Regional Airport in Pasco. The airport is served by Delta, Alaska Air/Horizon Air, United and Allegiant with flights to Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Mesa, Arizona with connections to eight major hubs. Nearby general aviation air service is also available at Richland and Prosser.

Water Transportation

The Columbia-Snake River commercial waterway system extends 465 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean.  Eight lock and dam complexes allow numerous barge lines to transport commodities to and from locations throughout the world. Barge service is available through the Port of Benton and the Port of Pasco.

Communications

Land line phone service is provided by Frontier and Charter.  Over two dozen cellular service carriers and internet service providers offer service in the area.  Benton City is connected to the statewide broadband network, with fiber cable connections to our medical facilities, library, schools, and government and public safety facilities.  Cable connections are also available to Benton City’s industrial areas.

Public Service

The Benton County Sheriff’s office provides law enforcement services to the City of Benton City and to unincorporated areas of the county.

Benton City and surrounding rural areas are served by Benton County Fire Protection District No. 2.  The Fire District is made up of 35 volunteer firefighters/EMT’s/paramedics, 6 resident firefighters, 4 career employees and 12 auxiliary support members.  They provide full fire/rescue services, as well as basic, intermediate and advanced  emergency ambulance transport service.  They have a robust automatic and mutual aid contract with 13 local fire departments and are also cooperative members of a regional tri-county hazardous materials team and incident management team, and contract water rescue services to the Columbia Basin Dive Rescue Team.
